A horizontal metal clasp runs across the cover instead of an elastic band — it holds the notebook shut under a laptop in a bag, which elastic loses the will to do after a year. The pen has an orange barrel. It is the one deliberately loud element in an otherwise conservative set, and buyers either want it or immediately ask for the plain version, which also exists. The clasp plate itself can be engraved rather than the leather, which gives a harder, more permanent mark. On runs above two hundred that is usually the better choice — engraving metal is consistent in a way debossing hide never quite is.
